Top High School Tennis Stories of the Year - Part 2


As I said yesterday, it was an excellent year for Section 2 High School tennis.  A big highlight was Masami Surisawa winning the backdraw at High School States.  No area Sophomore had that kind of success at States since 2007 when Albany Academy’s Matt Kandath won Boy’s States (when he was the youngest player to win States).  Masami not only won the Consolation draw, but he got to avenge some previous losses.  Earlier this year, Masami lost to Gurv Suri 2-6, 7-6(2), 10-5 at a Level 5 tournament in January.  This time Masami took the third set tiebreaker 12-10.  In the finals, he avenged another prior tournament loss when he played Anthony Markello - a Senior from Olean, NY.  Markello beat Masami 8-4 when they played back in February 2021 in a USTA tournament at Binghamton Tennis Center.  Revenge is sweet!



Bethlehem Tennis is riding high this year.  Both the Bethlehem Boys (Coach - Steve Smith) and the Bethlehem Girls (Coach - Scott George) won their respective Class AA Team Sectional Championships.  

"On October 14th the Varsity Girls defeated an outstanding Saratoga team in the Class AA Section II final - capturing our first sectional title since 2016!  On October 23rd, the Varsity Girls' played a regional match for the right to qualify for the NYS tournament against the champion from Section 3 (Fayetteville-Manlius of Syracuse), who was also undefeated." (Coach George).  Bethlehem won the match 6-1.  Unfortunately, at States Bethlehem's run ended when they ran into a powerhouse team from Syosset in the State Semi-Finals.  




"Our Varsity Boys' completed an undefeated 13-0 regular season and captured the Suburban Council league title - something we had not done since 2019. Our squad continued to team Sectionals, defeating Saratoga 9-0 in the Semi-Finals and defeating Shaker 7-2 in the Finals to capture our 4th consecutive Class AA Section II title!"  The Boys advanced to Regionals where they defeated Fayetteville-Manlius to earn a chance to play for the Championship at the National Tennis Center on Saturday.  GO EAGLES!

Our trip to the U.S. Open Qualifiers

Rhea Agrawal, Mia Corso, Mia Viasman      This past Thursday, we went on our annual team bus trip to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to see some of the best tennis players in the world try to qualify for the U.S. Open.  It was round 2 of the Qualifiers.  We also got to see the top players in the world practicing – players like Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Janik Sinner, Coco Gauff, and Aryna Sabalenka, to name a few.      After every match and every practice, there were hordes of young kids with oversized tennis balls waiting for autographs.  It was exciting.  We bought U.S. Open Hoodies, U.S. Open T-shirts, U.S. Open Caps, U.S. Open Towels, and even U.S. Open Candles.        Every time we go down to the National Tennis Center, it gets bigger, and every time, it gets better.  We will miss the experience and the camaraderie. Rhea, Mia, and Mia are Senior tennis players at the Albany Academy.

Summer Junior Team Tennis - Northern Region

  The Outdoor / Summer JTT league is now open for registration on Tennislink ( https://tennislink.usta.com/Dashboard/Main/ ) .  The name of the league is Capital District JTT Summer 2022 .  Please try to get your teams registered by 5/26/22 so that I can generate a schedule and get the kids on the courts.  If you have any questions or issues with registering your team please let me know--happy to help with registration and troubleshooting .  Once you have your team registered, registering the kids on the team can follow!   We have the following divisions in our summer league: 18A (advanced) 18B (intermediate) 14U 12U (yellow ball) 10U (orange ball; if teams would rather play green ball when they're playing each other, depending on the kids' experience, that's also fine)   At this point, our first day of matches at Central Park will likely be June 5th.  If there are teams ready to play prior to that, I will work with the other

Local Juniors go on the Road

      This weekend many of our talented local junior tennis players went on the road to play in tournaments outside our area. Many traveled to Cornell to play the Level 5 Tournament there. Northern Region players filled the Boys 12 and Under draw. Aksel Kelling led the way. He got a bye in the first round and followed it up with a win over 6th seeded Devon Brougher and a win over Roger Sheng before losing to the top-seeded Prayush Malliah. "I love playing my friend Roger and the sportsmanship and respect we have for each other." (Aksel) Roger got there by winning his first round match 6-0, 6-0, and then beating another local player Roshan Pandya. Roshan went on to win his consolation round match with Braydon Yu. Then he got a walkover win due to personal circumstances. Antonio Banchs got a first-round bye and beat his second-round opponent - Braiden Powell, before losing to the 4th seed - Sawyer Goudreau.
