JTT Sectionals - Northern Regional Results
The Sportime Champions (18 Advanced), YMCA Acers (18 Intermediate), and YMCA Devils (14 Intermediate) represented the Northern Region in the USTA Eastern Junior Team Tennis Sectionals at the Billy Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, Queens, NY.
The Devils had to play Team Gritty first. Team Gritty went undefeated in the tournament and won the 14 Intermediates. Next up was the team from Metro - HJTEP. The Devils won 4 out of 5 events thanks to Stephen Potvin (Boys Singles); Jolie Chichak (Girls Singles): Claire Dooley (Girls Doubles and Mixed Doubles); Yurui Lin (Girls Doubles; and Vivek Venkat (Mixed Doubles). They finished with a match against a strong Long Island team (Waldwick Covered Courts). Waldwick was the only team to challenge Team Gritty. Nevertheless, Jolie Chichak still came away with another singles win. "Overall a great team effort." (Andrea Peters - proud mom and Team Captain)
The YMCA ACERS were in it all the way. The ACERS won both of their matches on Saturday, defeating the Highland Park Hawks 30-11 and squeaking out a victory over TMDZ 23-20. On Sunday, they played a Binghamton team, and they started strong. Vincent Devito took the Boys' Singles 7-6, Riley Schmitz Took the Girl's Singles 6-0. Unfortunately, they came up short in the doubles. The final score was Binghamton 26, ACERS 24.
The Sportime Champions had the misfortune of drawing the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center team first round. They lost to the team from the Tennis Center, but then so did everyone else who played them. The Tennis Center team was loaded with talent - some of the top players in the Eastern Section. Juliette Ceas and Masami Surisawa managed to get a win in the Mixed Doubles. In their second-round match, Hayden Brown and Zain Magdon-Ismail got the Boys Doubles win, but the team lost the match 30-21.
All in all, there was some outstanding tennis played over the weekend at the National Tennis Center, and it's great that the Northern Region teams could be a part of it.
