The O'Briens - A Capital District Tennis Family - Part 1

Image
If you played Junior Team Tennis, Tournament tennis, or High School tennis in the Albany area anytime during the past ten years, chances are you played an O’Brien. There is Blair (8th Grade, Albany Academy); Owen (Freshman-Albany Academy); Brooke (Senior-Albany Academy); William (Freshman-Fairfield University); Aidan (Junior-Union College), and Conners (Senior-Naval Academy).  I will be writing a 3 part article on this outstanding local tennis family. The first two articles will focus on the boys.      For the O’Brien’s, tennis is also about family. “My Favorite tournament was the NYSPHSAA Championships my senior year of high school (2018). I won the back draw, but what made it the best was that my brothers Aidan and William also won the back draw in doubles. USTA Men's Leagues (40 and Over)

Four Men's 3.5 - 40 & Over - teams battle it out for the Northern Region USTA Adult League Championships. Congratulations to Tom Chin. His 3.5 Forty and Over team went undefeated, winning all six matches. Second Place went to another Tom - Gadomski - who captained the Puma's 3.5s. George Schlottner captained the third-place team, while Lou Ieronimo captained the other team. Jeff Denney (Puma's 3.5) summed up the league play - "It was pretty good competition. Our last match had three tiebreakers (7-6, 6-7, 1-0). We are all good friends. Once it's over, everyone is friendly." Currently, George Koh's "Enterprise" team leads the 3.0 Men's Division. The 3.0s have matches until June. In the 4.0's, Bill Mann's "One Little Victory 4.0" team is leading the pack.

Level 7 Easter Weekend Junior Tournament - 2022

Image
We had a good turnout for the Easter Weekend Tournament at SPORTIME Schenectady.  There was another great Level 7 Junior tournament today at SPORTIME Schenectady.   There were 22 players in 5 different age groupings – Boy’s 12’s, Boy’s 14’s; Girl’s 14’s; Girl’s 16’s, and Girl’s 18’s.   The 12 and Under Boy’s Singles was by far the largest group.   There were three round robins and a playoff round for the round-robin winners. Roger Sheng and Winston Banks played off for the Boy’s 12 finals.  Roger and Winston regularly play doubles together.  “It’s tough playing my doubles partner because I am used to playing with him so much.” (Winston Banks).  Winston and Roger closed out the day with an 8-6 match tiebreaker (won by Winston. Elizabeth Madonna came all the way from Hurley, NY, to play her first USTA Junior Tournament.   She plays high school tennis, and she told me, “High school is harder and longer (season), but I like tournaments too – I will probably play more tournaments.”
