16's Rankings - Northern Region

We have a lot of good players in the Northern Region.  I will be highlighting all age groups.  Today I am focusing on the 16 and Unders.  A quick look at the Girl's rankings shows why the Northern Region is as strong or stronger than it has ever been.  Of the top 5 ranked girls in the 16s, three are ranked even higher in younger age groups.  Olivia Dartawan and Maggie Sohns have rankings in the 12 and Under Division and the 14 and Under Division, while Hope Brown is ranked in the 14 and Under Division.  They will be featured in future articles when I focus on those age groups.

The two other players on the list owe some of their success to each other.  First of all, they have trained together so many times in the past.  Secondly, they got some of their points playing together as a doubles team.  Juliette focused on her USTA ranking this year.  She opted to play tournaments instead of high school tennis.  Top-level tournaments are played Friday evening, Saturday, and Sunday.  These tournaments are often 2-4 hours away, so playing a high school match or even practice beforehand is out of the question.

TOP 5 NORTHERN REGION 16 and Under Girls

1) Juliette Ceas (#62 in the Eastern Section)

2) Olivia Dartawan (#172 in the Eastern Section)

3) Hope Brown (#177 in the Eastern Section)

4) Katrina Setchenkov (#187 in the Eastern Section)

5) Maggie Sohns (#192 in the Eastern Section)

For the Boy's 16s, the top player is Krishnadhev Jammula.  He is ranked 59th in the Eastern Section.  This year is Dhev's first year in the 16's, so he has a lot of time to improve his ranking.  The second-ranked local player is Mahen Bitkuri. Mahen's told me his goal for the year is "to improve on my UTR Rating and USTA ranking." Mahen has come a long way.  His highest ranking in the fourteen was 43rd.  He is already 72nd in the 16s, and he just turned 15 four months ago.  His favorite tournament was the Level 5 Tournament he won in July at SPORTIME Schenectady.  "I won, and I played the best I ever played.  I play better on my home courts." The tournament was 14 and under, so it doesn't factor into his 16s ranking.

David Fenner helped his ranking by winning here too.  He won the President's Cup Level 6 Tournament 3 weeks ago and was runner up in the Holiday Level 6 tournament over Christmas break.  Dhev Jammula won that tournament.  Look for more good things from the local 16 and under boys and expect to see them do well in the upcoming Boy's High School tennis season.
