Women's Tournament Tennis Returns

 


This weekend marked the return of USTA Women’s Tennis Tournaments to the Northern Region.  Sportime Schenectady hosted the first Level 6 Women’s Open SinglesTournament under the USTA’s new format.  “I Love, Love, Love this format.” (Barb Glasser) 

There were 3 brackets of 3 players.  Each person played 2 matches using a short match format.  Since it was an open tournament both juniors and adults were able to compete against each other. 

Roxanne DeJohn told me “I like playing people of different ages.  It was a lot of fun and I liked playing new people.”  For Meghan Uzzilia it was a good experience.  “I got to play older players.  It was good for me to work on returning slices.”

Bracket A was won by Natalie Moore.    Bracket B was won by Hope Brown.  Bracket C was won by Meghan Uzzilia.

  The Outdoor / Summer JTT league is now open for registration on Tennislink ( https://tennislink.usta.com/Dashboard/Main/ ) .  The name of the league is Capital District JTT Summer 2022 .  Please try to get your teams registered by 5/26/22 so that I can generate a schedule and get the kids on the courts.  If you have any questions or issues with registering your team please let me know--happy to help with registration and troubleshooting .  Once you have your team registered, registering the kids on the team can follow!   We have the following divisions in our summer league: 18A (advanced) 18B (intermediate) 14U 12U (yellow ball) 10U (orange ball; if teams would rather play green ball when they're playing each other, depending on the kids' experience, that's also fine)   At this point, our first day of matches at Central Park will likely be June 5th.  If there are teams ready to play prior to that,...

Our trip to the U.S. Open Qualifiers

Rhea Agrawal, Mia Corso, Mia Viasman      This past Thursday, we went on our annual team bus trip to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to see some of the best tennis players in the world try to qualify for the U.S. Open.  It was round 2 of the Qualifiers.  We also got to see the top players in the world practicing – players like Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Janik Sinner, Coco Gauff, and Aryna Sabalenka, to name a few.      After every match and every practice, there were hordes of young kids with oversized tennis balls waiting for autographs.  It was exciting.  We bought U.S. Open Hoodies, U.S. Open T-shirts, U.S. Open Caps, U.S. Open Towels, and even U.S. Open Candles.        Every time we go down to the National Tennis Center, it gets bigger, and every time, it gets better.  We will miss the experience and the camaraderie. Rhea, Mia, and Mia are Senior tennis players at the Albany Academy.

Level 7 (518 Series) - Bethlehem

Bethlehem showed us why it's a hotbed of local junior tennis.  Fifty-Six juniors turned out for the Level 7 tournament there today - the next to last stop before the season-ending championships on August 27 at the Saratoga YMCA.       The 14 and Under Boy's Division was won by Roger Sheng .  Runner up was Aneesh Jakkamsetti .  On the Girl's side, Clare Dooley defeated Isabel Amurao in the Finals. The Boy's 18 & Unders was won by Aaditya Ojha.  He defeated Henri Pothier in the Finals.  The Girl's 18 Division was won by Hope Brown , who beat Jolie Chichak in the Finals.         Congratulations to Beth Kellerman and Scott George for running a great junior tennis event.
