Local Juniors Win Home and Away

Several years ago a coach from downstate was exiting my club at the end of a tournament and said to me “I beat your boys Peter Green.”  A year or so later I was able to say to him “I beat your boys.”  Thanks to Olivia Dartawan we can also say “I beat your girls.”  This past weekend Sportime Schenectady hosted a Level 5 Girls 14 and Under Tournament.  Level 5’s are among the highest level of Sectional Tournament there is and Olivia won the Singles event and was runner up in the doubles.  “It felt good to win a tournament at my home club.  I was happy and I had a lot of fun doing it.” (Olivia Dartawan).

Rajeev Rai travelled to Boston to play a Level 5 Boys Tournament there.  Rajeev was also a winner.  “It was not my first time there, but it was the first time I won.  I knew how they played and I enjoyed beating these kids who I had a tough time with before.” (Rajeev Rai)

Meanwhile Samantha Ostrander played her first tournament since March.  Sam told me “being out of the sport for so long has helped me realize it’s truly my passion.  Samantha is coming off an injury.  She returned to competitive play by winning a Level 6 Girls 18 Tournament at Elevate in Liverpool, NY.      

It’s great to see so many of our local players doing well in these tournaments.  It shows how far tennis in the Northern Region has come in the past few years and I see a great future for Northern Region junior tennis.

  The Outdoor / Summer JTT league is now open for registration on Tennislink ( https://tennislink.usta.com/Dashboard/Main/ ) .  The name of the league is Capital District JTT Summer 2022 .  Please try to get your teams registered by 5/26/22 so that I can generate a schedule and get the kids on the courts.  If you have any questions or issues with registering your team please let me know--happy to help with registration and troubleshooting .  Once you have your team registered, registering the kids on the team can follow!   We have the following divisions in our summer league: 18A (advanced) 18B (intermediate) 14U 12U (yellow ball) 10U (orange ball; if teams would rather play green ball when they're playing each other, depending on the kids' experience, that's also fine)   At this point, our first day of matches at Central Park will likely be June 5th.  If there are teams ready to play prior to that,...

Our trip to the U.S. Open Qualifiers

Rhea Agrawal, Mia Corso, Mia Viasman      This past Thursday, we went on our annual team bus trip to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to see some of the best tennis players in the world try to qualify for the U.S. Open.  It was round 2 of the Qualifiers.  We also got to see the top players in the world practicing – players like Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Janik Sinner, Coco Gauff, and Aryna Sabalenka, to name a few.      After every match and every practice, there were hordes of young kids with oversized tennis balls waiting for autographs.  It was exciting.  We bought U.S. Open Hoodies, U.S. Open T-shirts, U.S. Open Caps, U.S. Open Towels, and even U.S. Open Candles.        Every time we go down to the National Tennis Center, it gets bigger, and every time, it gets better.  We will miss the experience and the camaraderie. Level 7 (518 Series) - Bethlehem

Bethlehem showed us why it's a hotbed of local junior tennis.  Fifty-Six juniors turned out for the Level 7 tournament there today - the next to last stop before the season-ending championships on August 27 at the Saratoga YMCA.       The 14 and Under Boy's Division was won by Roger Sheng .  Runner up was Aneesh Jakkamsetti .  On the Girl's side, Clare Dooley defeated Isabel Amurao in the Finals. The Boy's 18 & Unders was won by Aaditya Ojha.  He defeated Henri Pothier in the Finals.  The Girl's 18 Division was won by Hope Brown , who beat Jolie Chichak in the Finals.         Congratulations to Beth Kellerman and Scott George for running a great junior tennis event.
