Northern Region Juniors Rule





 It was a fantastic weekend of tournament tennis for Northern Region juniors.

 Ilaria Bitunova won the Girl’s 12 and Under Level 4 tournament at Centre Court Tennis Club in Riverside, Rhode Island.  “It feels great to win.  Just getting to the final, and beating the No. 1 seed from Florida for me, was amazing.  Before the tournament, I wanted to play the No. 1 seed, and I really wanted to defeat her, and then it happened.”  – Ilaria

Meanwhile, Maggie Sohns has added two tournament successes in the past two weeks.  Last weekend Maggie went to Mountainside, NJ, and won the Girl’s 12s Level 4 Tournament.  The week before, she played The Level 5 Open (Girl’s 14s) Tournament at Centercourt in New Jersey, and she won that too.  “It’s amazing to see everyone improving and working on their games and fun to see everyone again.  I love tennis.”  Maggie

  We had two other tournament winners this weekend.  Roshan Pandya played a Level 7 tournament (Elevate Fitness/Liverpool, NY) and won the Boy’s 12 event. At the same time, Nisha Jayaprakash was a winner at the East Hartford Tennis Club in Connecticut (Girl’s 14 and Unders).

 Olivia Dartawan played a Girl’s 14 Level 4 Tournament at Sportsplex in New Windsor, NY, and finished 6th.   Meanwhile, Mahen Bitkuri traveled to Torrington, Ct, to play a Level 6 tournament at Pinewoods Health and Racquet, where he was runner-up.  Lastly, Rajeev Rai traveled to Nashua, NH, for a Level 4 12 & Under tournament.  Rajeev won the 5-8 playoff and finished 5th.



 Northern Region juniors keep getting better and better and there is more great tennis to come.

Local Juniors go on the Road

      This weekend many of our talented local junior tennis players went on the road to play in tournaments outside our area. Many traveled to Cornell to play the Level 5 Tournament there. Northern Region players filled the Boys 12 and Under draw. Aksel Kelling led the way. He got a bye in the first round and followed it up with a win over 6th seeded Devon Brougher and a win over Roger Sheng before losing to the top-seeded Prayush Malliah. "I love playing my friend Roger and the sportsmanship and respect we have for each other." (Aksel) Roger got there by winning his first round match 6-0, 6-0, and then beating another local player Roshan Pandya. Roshan went on to win his consolation round match with Braydon Yu. Then he got a walkover win due to personal circumstances. Antonio Banchs got a first-round bye and beat his second-round opponent - Braiden Powell, before losing to the 4th seed - Sawyer Goudreau. Level 7 (518 Series) - Bethlehem

Bethlehem showed us why it's a hotbed of local junior tennis.  Fifty-Six juniors turned out for the Level 7 tournament there today - the next to last stop before the season-ending championships on August 27 at the Saratoga YMCA.       The 14 and Under Boy's Division was won by Roger Sheng .  Runner up was Aneesh Jakkamsetti .  On the Girl's side, Clare Dooley defeated Isabel Amurao in the Finals. The Boy's 18 & Unders was won by Aaditya Ojha.  He defeated Henri Pothier in the Finals.  The Girl's 18 Division was won by Hope Brown , who beat Jolie Chichak in the Finals.         Congratulations to Beth Kellerman and Scott George for running a great junior tennis event. July 2022 Junior Tournament Results

   We had two fantastic weeks for local junior tournament players. There were four junior tournaments in the Northern Region in just two weekends. A great two weekends for Northern Region junior tennis players. There was also a USTA World Tennis Number Banded event on Monday.  518 Level 7 Tournament at Shenedehowa On Saturday, Shenendehowa hosted the second leg of the 518 Tournament Series, and Chris Hanley did a masterful job. Many local kids played their first USTA tournament, with entries from as far away as Vermont. T Hats off to the Winners, Runners Up, and all who played.
