January Junior Tournaments - 2022

Level 6 - January 15


It is a busy time for Northern Region junior tennis tournament players.  This past weekend there were two junior tennis tournaments at SPORTIME Schenectady  The first one was Saturday – a Level 6 Junior Tournament; the second one was Sunday – a 10 & under tournament.  This coming weekend SPORTIME will host a high level tournament for 14 and under players. 

 Saturday’s tournament featured players from all around the Eastern Section – from Garden City, NY to Buffalo, NY and as far South as DeMarest, NJ.

 BOYS 12 SINGLES

Collin Mika Defeated Easton Chichak in the Finals

BOYS 14 SINGLES

Jacob Lyubarov won the Round Robin; Austin Li finished second

GIRLS 12 SINGLES

Clare Dooley won the Round Robin; Katie Sheng finished second

GIRLS 16 SINGLES

Kayla Castellano Defeated Rayka Kogut

10 & Unders - January 16

        
Players also travelled here for the 10 & Under tournament on Sunday.  As far East as Bethel, CT and as far West as Fayetteville, NY.  We have a lot of young up and coming players in the area who welcome the opportunity to play against new challengers from out of town.  It’s exciting to see how many good young players we have competing in the area now.  Here are the results:

Ryan Limam Defeated Vachan Prabhushettar in the Finals

ORANGE BALL

Brooklyn Kelling won the Round Robin; Kai Hayes-De finished second



 

    



This coming Weekend SPORTIME will host a high level tournament for 14 and under Girls.  Check back here for results.

Summer Junior Team Tennis - Northern Region

  The Outdoor / Summer JTT league is now open for registration on Tennislink ( https://tennislink.usta.com/Dashboard/Main/ ) .  The name of the league is Capital District JTT Summer 2022 .  Please try to get your teams registered by 5/26/22 so that I can generate a schedule and get the kids on the courts.  If you have any questions or issues with registering your team please let me know--happy to help with registration and troubleshooting .  Once you have your team registered, registering the kids on the team can follow!   We have the following divisions in our summer league: 18A (advanced) 18B (intermediate) 14U 12U (yellow ball) 10U (orange ball; if teams would rather play green ball when they're playing each other, depending on the kids' experience, that's also fine)   At this point, our first day of matches at Central Park will likely be June 5th.  If there are teams ready to play prior to that,...

Our trip to the U.S. Open Qualifiers

Rhea Agrawal, Mia Corso, Mia Viasman      This past Thursday, we went on our annual team bus trip to the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center to see some of the best tennis players in the world try to qualify for the U.S. Open.  It was round 2 of the Qualifiers.  We also got to see the top players in the world practicing – players like Carlos Alcaraz, Novak Djokovic, Janik Sinner, Coco Gauff, and Aryna Sabalenka, to name a few.      After every match and every practice, there were hordes of young kids with oversized tennis balls waiting for autographs.  It was exciting.  We bought U.S. Open Hoodies, U.S. Open T-shirts, U.S. Open Caps, U.S. Open Towels, and even U.S. Open Candles.        Every time we go down to the National Tennis Center, it gets bigger, and every time, it gets better.  We will miss the experience and the camaraderie. Rhea, Mia, and Mia are Senior tennis players at the Albany Academy.

Level 7 (518 Series) - Bethlehem

Bethlehem showed us why it's a hotbed of local junior tennis.  Fifty-Six juniors turned out for the Level 7 tournament there today - the next to last stop before the season-ending championships on August 27 at the Saratoga YMCA.       The 14 and Under Boy's Division was won by Roger Sheng .  Runner up was Aneesh Jakkamsetti .  On the Girl's side, Clare Dooley defeated Isabel Amurao in the Finals. The Boy's 18 & Unders was won by Aaditya Ojha.  He defeated Henri Pothier in the Finals.  The Girl's 18 Division was won by Hope Brown , who beat Jolie Chichak in the Finals.         Congratulations to Beth Kellerman and Scott George for running a great junior tennis event.
